[4:45-]
I believe that all of these things in these opening 9 verses is set before us as
something we may profit from in each one of us in our own lives and be warned
concerning the wickedness of envy. James says in his Epistle in Chapter 4, "The
spirit," -with a little "s", "The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy. All sinners,
including the children of God are driven by lust; It's a Greek word, which means
simply "desire" ; "Desire" that work against holy, perfect and righteous law of
God. That is what it is to be a sin. And here, in speaking in this Chapter of lust,
James says, "The spirit within us," the human spirit, that defiled, corrupt human
spirit lusteth to envy. That in one way or another, our hearts are disposed to
envy. At least that's my interpretation, in verses in James and other scholars as
well.

[19:25~]
Hatred is a child of envy; you cannot love someone you envy.
They envied Danel because he was preferred before them. That hurt them:
Their pride could not tlerate. That he would be preferred before them, and
not only that, but because if the king followed throuhgh with this plan, then
they would have to do what Daniel said. [~20:06]

**************************

[20:00~24:00]
And even though Daniel's direction might be just and equal and fair and loving,
they hated the idea that they would have to do what he said.
[~20:23]
Daniel was hated also because of his excellent character. It was not just that
they envied his position of authority, and Daniel as one preferred before them
but the Scriptures emphasizes his excellent character. And not only that, that
these princes, after they scrutinized to find something that can bring against
Daniel. May be to show the king that he was unworthy. May be like somebody
that's been nominated to the supreme court and somebody goes out to find
and dig up some kind of trash on him, so that these nomination would not be
confirmed.
[21:08~]
So they looked everywhere for some blemish and fault but they could not find,
verse 4, none occasion or fault for as much as he was faithful, neither was there
any error or fault found in him.
There are such a thing is envying another person for their gifts and graces.
They envied the perfection, if you like, character, sincerity and truth and wisdom;
all of these thing that they saw in Daniel as if they would take these gifts away f
rom him and have them themselves. Again the sin of discontentment. And they
hated him for his goodness.
[22:00~]
Now Psalm 62, amongst so many Psalms especially in that section, speaks of the
hatred of the enemies of our Lord for him, how they plotted against him. And in
this verse in Psalm 62, they only consult to cast down his excellency; it bothered
them to see a man so perfect and good. Doesn't this expose the wickedness of
human nature? that it cannot love but only hate those that are good. Our Lord,
speaking to his adversaries in Matthew20, says If thine eyes evil because I am
good...?
[]
Do you have an evil eye because of my goodness? Is that offends you? Yes, it
does. Goodness offends the eye of sinful men. It breeds envy and hatred. There
is so much evil in this sin.
[]
Peter, in making his last sermon as he preached to the counsil before he was
stoned to death. And reciting the history of God's people, and how evil was that
history. And he said that the Patriarchs, meaning Abraham, Issac and Jacob. And
the sons of Jacob, each one became the head of the tribe in Israel. he Patriarchs
moved with envy, sold Josesh as a slave to Egypt. Joseph had an excellent
character, too. There was something about him that was different, and they
hated him. Not only for the fact the father loved him, but because of all the g
ifts and graces upon him. They were moved with envy, and they sold him.
[~24:01]

********************
[34:53~39:45]
There are some lessons to be learned from this passage in God's word. [35:03~]
And the first thing is that Daniel's suffering under the hatred of envy .
Envy hates. You can see these in thse presidents and princes. Though Daniel
was a perfect man, they hated him because he was preferred. All of this should
remind you and me of the suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ, I say, here also is
Christ. When you think the Bible doesn't go a whole lot of the details, and you
magine the pain of Daniel he suffered, from these men that hated him, plotted
to overthrow, and put him into a situation where his life and everything was at
risk.
In John Ch.15, and that discourse of our Lord with His disciples the night He was
betrayed before He suffered. Jesus said to the disciples that He was hated, in
spite of the fact that He had done the works that no one else had ever done,
and notice that what evil there is in the heart that hated Jesus even though He
was unlike and different, He was Holy and harmless and undefiled. And He did
works that no man, he says, had ever done, yet Jesus said they hated Him. Is
that () you, Daniel? And in that same discourse, Jesus said, yes, they hated me
my own people, the Church of that day, they hated Me without a cause.
"Without a cause." And that is, we can find the passages that bear witness to
this in the Psalms that foretell His sufferings in Psalm 35:19, in Psalm 41 and
others; we can turn to. He was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
Have you ever thought about that?; Jesus was no stranger to sorrow, and He
was a friend, a companion of grief. And what do you think might have brought
Him grief to His Holy human soul, except that He was hated because of His
goodness? They only consult to cast down His excellency.
What a wicked thing is envy; do you know, you can envy someone for their
gifts as if to want deep in your heart to strip away those gifts to take them
away. That was the case with Christ. And why would He endure such grief
and sorrow, and to save sinners from their own sins, for giving Himself a
Rensom for our sins? We can think of the pain He endured on the Cross, when
He was whipped with the cords of the Roman whips. But think about the
emotional grief that He suffered for our sins and being despised and rejected,
and HATED because, not "in spite of" His goodness, but "because of it."
Men love darkness rather than light, because his deeds are evil. Such is the
depraved character of men that hate goodness.
Oh, yes, God's people love the Holiness that they see in faithful Christians,
but many others see the same holiness and hate that person for their holiness.
I hope you're not one of them. And second, consider that if you would follow
Christ in uprightness of heart, you must expect to be hated, too. Don't expect
to win a popularity contest. In that same Chapter where in that upper room
discourse in John Chapter 15, having spoken of how men hated Him without a
cause, Jesus said to the disciples, "If the world hate you, know that it hated
Me before."
[~39:45

[50:22~51:35]PRAYER

Almight and eternal God, we thank Thee for these examples in Thy word.
We think of the evil of the sin of envy, the hatred that comes from it;
and grant, Lord, that we acknowledge and confess to Thee even these
attitudes is found in our sinful hearts Pardon us in Thy great mercy in Jesus'
Sake, and cleanse us from our sins. Give us a hatred, -in Daniel's, -those that
are under him hated him, because of his goodness, sought to strip it all away,
make us to hate the envy that sometimes wells up in our hearts, that we
may be content in the place where Thou hast placed us, and be content.
And grant us often as we suffer, that we may remember Thy love, and be
sustained by it. And these mercies, we ask.
In Jesus' Name.
Amen.
